A Thai wedding and a Thai marriage are separate events, and only one of them has legal effect. What creates the marriage is registration by a registrar at a district office. Everything else is a celebration.
The registration itself is simple. The application is made in writing in the prescribed form, the applicants sign the register before the registrar, and at least two witnesses sign at the same time. On registering the marriage, the registrar issues one copy of the registration certificate to each party without charging a fee.
What is not simple, for foreign couples, is arriving with documents the registrar will accept. That is where almost all of the delay and almost all of the professional cost sits.
Since 23 January 2025, when the Marriage Equality Act came into effect, couples can register at any district office across Thailand and at Thai embassies overseas, on the same terms regardless of the couple's genders.
Thai nationals: Thai ID card or passport
Plus household registration documents. Two witnesses are needed, conventionally one from each side.
Foreign nationals: passport
Along with the single-status certificate below. A foreigner registering in Thailand is showing identity and marital status, in that order of importance.
A certificate of single status from the home country
This is the document that most often derails a registration, because of the certification chain it has to go through before a Thai registrar will accept it.
Parental consent where either party is under 20
Required in addition to everything else, and worth confirming in advance rather than at the counter.
Two witnesses
They sign the register in front of the registrar at the same time as the parties, so they need to attend.
Certified Thai translations
A Thai registrar works from Thai. Translation and consular certification take time and are the reason to start weeks rather than days ahead.
A single-status certificate cannot simply be handed over. Where it was issued by your home country, it has to be certified by that country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and by the Thai Embassy or Consulate-General there, then translated into Thai and certified by the Department of Consular Affairs at the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Where the certificate was issued instead by your own embassy or consulate inside Thailand, the chain is shorter: it still has to be translated into Thai and certified by the Department of Consular Affairs.
That second route is why many foreign nationals obtain the document from their embassy in Bangkok rather than from home. It removes two steps and a great deal of international post.
If you are registering at a Thai embassy abroad rather than in Thailand, the certificate is certified by your home country's foreign ministry and submitted there.
Anything issued in another language also needs certified translation, and documents produced abroad often route through embassy document services as part of the same exercise.

For a couple with clean documents and no complications, the honest answer is: not much. The registration is a district office matter and a firm that charges heavily to accompany you to it is charging for logistics rather than law.
The situations where advice earns its fee are different ones.
Where either party has been married before, the previous marriage has to be properly ended and evidenced, and foreign divorce documents carry the same legalisation problem as everything else. Where a prenuptial agreement is wanted, the formalities are tied to the marriage registration itself rather than something that can be added later, so it has to be organised in advance. Where the marriage is being registered partly for immigration purposes, the interaction between the two is worth understanding before rather than after.
And where a registration is refused. The Family Registration Act says a registrar shall not register a marriage where it appears the conditions in the Civil and Commercial Code are not met. If that happens, the Act gives an interested party the right to apply to the Court without paying the court fee, and where the Court finds the conditions are in fact met it orders the registration to be accepted.
Get the single-status certificate
From your embassy in Thailand if you can, since it removes two certification steps. From home otherwise, allowing for the full chain.
Complete the certification chain
Home foreign ministry and Thai Embassy abroad, or straight to translation where the certificate came from your embassy in Thailand. Then Thai translation and Department of Consular Affairs certification.
Check for impediments
Previous marriages properly ended and documented, ages, and parental consent where either party is under 20. This is what a registrar checks.
Deal with any prenuptial agreement first
Its formalities attach to the marriage registration, so it has to exist and be in order before you attend, not afterwards.
Attend with two witnesses
Both parties sign the register before the registrar, and at least two witnesses sign at the same time.
Collect the certificates
The registrar issues one copy of the registration certificate to each party without a fee. Certified copies later carry a fee under the ministerial regulations.
Registration outside the registration office can be requested, which is what makes a registration at a resort or a home possible, but it carries a fee under the ministerial regulations rather than being free.
Inspecting the register is free; obtaining a certified copy of an entry is not. That matters later, because immigration and foreign authorities usually want certified copies rather than the original certificates you were given on the day.
A marriage conducted abroad in the form that country's law prescribes can be recorded in Thailand, which is the route for couples who married elsewhere and now need the marriage recognised here.
For the wider practice, family lawyers in Thailand handle registration alongside prenuptial agreements, divorce and children's matters.
This page is general information, not legal advice. Requirements vary with nationality and with individual circumstances, so confirm your own position with your embassy and, where anything is complicated, with a qualified professional.
