There is no published formula, and that is the first thing to know

Parents arriving from countries with a statutory child maintenance calculator expect a percentage. Thailand does not publish one, and no official source sets a scale a page could honestly quote.

What that means in practice is that maintenance is either agreed between the parents or fixed by a court on the circumstances of the particular family. Both of those are fact-driven exercises, which is why any figure quoted to you as "the standard amount in Thailand" should be treated as an opinion rather than a rule.

It also means the negotiation matters more here than in a formula jurisdiction. The number that gets agreed or ordered depends heavily on how the case is presented, and on what evidence exists about each parent's means and the child's actual costs.

What the work involves

Establishing entitlement comes first: who the legal parents are, and whether a legitimation step is needed before a claim can be brought at all.

Then the evidence. Maintenance is decided on means and needs, so the useful material is documentary: income records, business accounts where a parent is self-employed, the child's actual costs including schooling and medical care, and the standard of living the child has had. Self-employed and cash-based incomes are the recurring difficulty, and building a picture from bank activity and lifestyle rather than payslips is a large part of the job.

Then the mechanism. An agreement can be recorded as part of a divorce settlement or separately, which is faster and cheaper. A court order is the alternative where agreement fails, and it comes with the advantage of being enforceable in its own right.

Finally, enforcement, which is where most of the real frustration in this area lives. An order that a parent ignores has to be pursued, and the practical routes depend on what that parent has and where it is. Where the paying parent is abroad, or moves abroad, recognition and enforcement in that country becomes the live question rather than the Thai order itself.

Being realistic about enforcement

The honest position is that obtaining an order and collecting under it are different projects. Collection depends on the paying parent having identifiable income or assets within reach, and on their remaining somewhere the order can be acted on.

That is worth knowing at the start, because it changes what a sensible strategy looks like. Where a paying parent has a Thai employer and Thai bank accounts, an order is a practical instrument. Where they are self-employed, mobile, or already abroad, a negotiated arrangement with security behind it may deliver more than a judgment that is difficult to act on.

A firm that discusses enforcement with you at the outset is doing the job properly. One that quotes a figure and a timescale without asking what the other parent does for a living is not.
