What the Thailand Privilege Visa actually is

The Thailand Privilege Visa is what you receive after buying a membership in a paid programme run by Thailand Privilege Card Co., Ltd. The Government Public Relations Department describes it as a long-term visa programme for foreigners who want to live in Thailand comfortably or travel in and out frequently, with multiple entries and validity of 5, 10, 15 or 20 years, managed by Thailand Privilege Card under the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

Most readers arrive here searching for the Thailand Elite Visa. Same programme. Thailand Elite was rebranded as Thailand Privilege, and Nation Thailand reports the company is overseen by the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Older embassy pages, agent sites and forum threads still use the Elite name, and the two are used interchangeably in practice.

What you buy is a membership. What the membership produces is a visa in one of two categories, and the Royal Thai Embassy in Washington DC names both: the Special Entry visa, SE, and the Privilege Entry visa, PE. It is not permanent residency, not a path to citizenship, and not permission to work.

There is no such thing as a Thailand golden visa. The phrase gets a fair amount of search traffic, but Thailand runs no residency-by-investment scheme. People using it are usually pointing at either this membership or the Long-Term Resident visa, which are different instruments with different rules.

What Thailand Privilege membership costs

Membership prices are the operator's commercial prices, not government fees, so they move when the company decides they move. The figures below come from the operator's own announcement of the post-rebrand packages, carried by Nation Thailand, and were checked on 26 August 2026. Confirm the current price with the operator or an agent before you transfer anything.

The costs nobody puts next to the membership fee

The membership fee is paid to the company, not to a consulate. The Royal Thai Consulate-General in Los Angeles says as much on its own page: the fee is paid directly to the operator, and the consulate handles the visa itself. That is why there is no government visa fee to compare against, and why the only real cost variable left is what an agent charges you.

Government charges still land on a member. Leaving Thailand ordinarily ends your current permission to stay unless you hold a re-entry permit, which the Immigration Bureau prices at 1,000 baht for a single permit and 3,800 baht for a multiple permit. No source we can verify states whether your membership covers those, so ask the programme directly rather than assuming.

A late 90-day notification costs 2,000 baht. That is a small number against a six-figure membership, and it is still a fine you can be handed while holding one.

Memberships are sold both directly and through authorised general sales and service agents. No verifiable source publishes what agents charge on top, and at least one agent states its price is identical to the operator's. Rather than quote a range we cannot stand behind: ask any agent to put its own fee in writing, separately from the membership fee, before you engage it.

Who can apply, and who cannot

The Royal Thai Embassy in Budapest publishes the eligibility and disqualification list in plainer terms than most agent pages manage. You need a valid passport from an accepted, non-sanctioned country, a clean record on Thai immigration law, and the membership fee paid.

Four things disqualify an applicant. A history of overstaying in Thailand. An imprisonment sentence in any country, except for offences based on negligence. A legal declaration of mental incompetence. Citizenship of a sanctioned country. Immigration approval is required in every case, so the background check is real rather than a formality attached to a payment.

One detail catches people who are already living here. Holders of a Non-O volunteer visa, an ED visa or a non-immigrant medical treatment visa must disclose that status, and may be asked for further documentation. Hiding a current visa type is a bad way to start a process that turns on a background check.

How the process works

The sequence runs in a fixed order, and it fails most often when someone pays first and then leaves the paperwork sitting. Two documents control the timing: the certification letter the company issues you, and the e-Visa application you file with it.

What this visa does not let you do

It does not let you work. Working in Thailand requires a work permit, and the visa category attached to a Privilege membership is not a work-permit route. A foreigner who works without a permit is liable to a fine of 5,000 to 50,000 baht and is sent out of the Kingdom once the fine is paid.

The definition of work is wider than most new arrivals expect, and some work is closed to foreigners regardless of visa or salary. The Ministry of Labour's notification on work prohibited to aliens, in force since 20 June 2020, sorts prohibited work into four lists, and the first list is absolute with no exception available.

Remote work for a foreign employer sits in a grey area that people argue about confidently in both directions. The honest position is that the membership itself grants nothing on this point, and a lawyer can tell you how your specific arrangement is likely to be treated.

It also grants no permanent residency, no citizenship, and no property rights beyond what any other foreigner has. A long visa is a long visa.

What happens after you have it

The 90-day report is not waived. Embassy copy for this programme talks about living in Thailand without 90-day reporting hassles, and agent copy promises an assistant handles it. Both are describing a concierge service, not a legal exemption. The Immigration Bureau's own handbook is unambiguous: an alien granted temporary permission to stay must notify their residence to an immigration officer every 90 days.

The window runs from 15 days before the 90th day to 7 days after it, on form TM.47, with an online channel available around the clock. Miss it and you notify in person and pay a 2,000 baht fine. If you leave Thailand and come back, the counter restarts from the new arrival date.

Re-entry permits are applied for in person on form TM.8, with your passport and departure card, at a stated counter service time of 50 minutes. The fee is not refundable, and you have to already hold permission to stay stamped in a valid passport.

Extensions of stay and changes of visa type are handled at the immigration office covering the province where you live, not at a single central office. Where you register your address decides where you queue.

What none of this removes is the paperwork. It buys you help with the paperwork, delivered at airports and service centres, which for a frequent traveller is worth real money. It is a service, and it should be priced as one.

Thailand Privilege against the cheaper routes

This is the section most pages about the Elite visa leave out, and it is the one that saves readers the most money. The membership has no income floor, no investment test and no age minimum. That is exactly why it is the most expensive option available to anyone who could qualify somewhere else.

The LTR visa is the route for people who can meet an income or investment test, and it reports annually rather than every 90 days. The retirement visa route is for readers who are 50 or over and can meet the funds requirement. The DTV visa is the one the operator itself named as competition.

Risks worth pricing in

The terms are commercial, and commercial terms change. The programme has already restructured once, folding eight packages into four and closing Bronze to new applicants. A twenty-year membership is a twenty-year bet on a company's pricing and benefits, not on a statute.

The pressure on it is public. In January 2025 the president of Thailand Privilege Card told Nation Thailand that given the significant price difference, yet the same five-year stay period, the sale of privilege cards will inevitably be impacted, comparing a 10,000 baht DTV against a 650,000 baht Bronze card. When the operator says that out loud, a buyer should hear it.

Refunds are the gap you have to close yourself. No official source publishes a refund policy for this programme, so we publish none. Get the written terms before you pay, and ask two specific questions: what happens if the application is refused, and what happens once the membership is activated.

Overstay and immigration compliance still sit with you. A visa this long makes it easy to stop paying attention to dates, and the reporting duties described above do not soften because the visa is expensive.

Working with a visa agency

The membership price is set by the operator, which means the honest question to ask any intermediary is what it charges on top and what that buys. Some agents are authorised general sales and service agents with a licence number they will quote you. Others are marketing sites. The questions worth asking before you engage anyone: what is your fee, separately from the membership fee, in writing. What happens to both if the application is refused. Who files the e-Visa application, and on what date. What does the membership cover on re-entry permits and 90-day reports, and what is left to me.
